Explore The Numbers
How Many Died?
The exact number of deaths under Joseph Stalin’s rule (1924–1953 – 29 years of hell) is difficult to determine due to incomplete records and differing methodologies among historians. However, estimates generally range from 6 to 20 million deaths as a result of his policies, including:
- The Great Purge (1936–1938): Around 700,000 to 1.2 million people were executed or died in prison during Stalin’s political repression campaigns.
- Forced Collectivization and the Holodomor (1932–1933): The forced collectivization of agriculture led to a man-made famine, particularly in Ukraine (known as the Holodomor), which caused an estimated 3 to 5 million deaths.
- Gulag System: Millions were sent to labor camps, where harsh conditions led to 1.5 to 3 million deaths over the course of Stalin’s rule.
- Deportations and Ethnic Cleansing: Stalin’s policies of deporting entire ethnic groups (e.g., Chechens, Crimean Tatars, Volga Germans) resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths due to forced relocations and harsh conditions.
- Other Causes: Additional deaths occurred due to wartime policies, executions of political opponents, and general repression.
While the total number of deaths is debated, most historians agree that Stalin’s regime was responsible for the deaths of millions of people through direct violence, famine, and forced labor.
Who Was Stalin?
Joseph Stalin was a Marxist, socialist, and communist, Here’s how each label applies to him:
- Marxist/Marxism: Stalin adhered to Marxism, especially regarding the role of the state and central planning.
- Socialist/Socialism: Under Stalin, the Soviet Union was officially a socialist state, as per Marxist-Leninist ideology. He implemented a command economy with state control over industry and agriculture, believing this was a necessary step toward communism.
- Communist/Communism: Stalin led the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and aimed to build a communist society. Communism lead to authoritarian, with centralized power and repression.
His rule is often classified as Stalinism, a form of authoritarian socialism. Included extreme centralization, forced collectivization, political purges, and repression. All the while using Marxist and communist rhetoric. As seen in the video above.
